David R. Hodgson, BVSc, PhD, Diplomate ACVIM, FACSM

Professor and Head, Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences

Dr. Hodgson graduated with a bachelor of science in veterinary science before earning a Ph.D., both from the University of Sydney in Australia.

After graduating, he worked as an assistant and associate professor of large animal medicine at Washington State University in Pullman. He also served as associate professor, hospital director, professor of large animal medicine, and director of clinical teaching at the University of Sydney. He began at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine as a professor and department head of the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences in 2007.

Dr. Hodgson is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Large Animal and holds professional memberships with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Equine Practitioners, American College of Sports Medicine, and the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association.

His research interests include the physiology of exercise, respiratory disease, and internal medicine of horses.
