Residency and Internship Programs

The Equine Medical Center offers residency training programs in equine internal medicine and surgery and a one-year rotating medicine and surgery internship program for post-DVM professionals.

The Equine Center's residency training programs in equine internal medicine, surgery, and sports medicine are approved by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, American College of Veterinary Surgery, and American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The programs provide post-DVM professionals with the following:

  • Preparation for board eligibility leading to specialty board certification through in-depth clinical training.
  • Training in research.
  • Graduate education leading to the M.S./Ph.D. qualification.

With starting dates in January and July each year, the Equine Center's one-year rotating medicine, surgery, and sports medicine internship provides interns with the training and experience to compete for high-quality positions in private practice or advanced training programs.

Preference is given to individuals with special equine veterinary experience or credentials and to those who have completed an externship at the Equine Center.

Intern responsibilities and mentorship

  • Interns assist as needed in the anesthesia, nursing/patient care, and imaging departments and rotate between the internal medicine and surgery services.
  • Interns participate in hospital rounds and case discussions and rotate in after-hours emergency and critical care schedules.
  • Intern schedules are coordinated by the hospital director. A designated faculty member advises and mentors each intern to set professional goals and achieve clinical proficiency in a broad range of disciplines.
