Alissa Rexo, DVM, DACVD
Alissa Rexo, DVM, DACVD, is a board‑certified veterinary dermatologist with a special emphasis on equine dermatology. She earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island in 2006, after completing a cum laude B.S. in Biology at Wheaton College, and completed a comprehensive dermatology residency with substantial exposure to equine cases.
Dr. Rexo combines advanced training in diagnosing and treating skin, ear, and allergy disorders with extensive hands‑on experience managing dermatologic disease in horses—ranging from performance athletes to backyard companions. Her clinical expertise includes allergic dermatitis, insect‑bite hypersensitivities, parasitic and fungal infections, chronic otitis, immune‑mediated skin disease, and hoof‑associated dermatologic conditions; she routinely uses advanced diagnostics (cytology, culture and PCR, skin biopsy, trichoscopy) and tailors topical, systemic, immunomodulatory, biologic, and enzyme‑based therapies to each patient’s needs.
Actively involved in research and education, Dr. Rexo frequently presents at national and international conferences and publishes in peer‑reviewed journals; she is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology, and the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture, and previously served as Chief Medical Officer at a biotech company developing enzyme‑based dermatology products for animals.
At home in Loudoun County with her husband, three sons, Maine Coon cat Apple, and Frenchie Pickles, she competes in the hunter‑jumper discipline with her horses Nike and Zion and applies her clinical knowledge to optimize equine skin health for performance and well‑being; she also enjoys reading, hiking, skiing, and kayaking. Driven to improve the lives of animals through specialized dermatologic care, Dr. Rexo blends evidence‑based medicine, practical horse‑side experience, and compassionate client partnership to deliver outcomes that support both equine health and performance.
